Welcome to Castlebrook High School PE Department.  Physical Education at Castlebrook aims to develop the learner's confidence in a range of physical activities.  We encourage learners to engage in physical activity both in and out of school with sport occupying a central role in their lives.

The curriculum enables all learners to enjoy and succeed in a wide range of physical activities.  Learners develop the ability to use tactics and strategies to perform successfully.  Learners are encouraged to reflect on their own performance and the performance of others.  They learn about the value of healthy, active lifestyles as well as developing personally and socially.  Learners work as individuals, in groups and in teams, developing concepts of fairness and social responsibility.

Key Stage 3

Throughout years 7 and 8 learners receive two hours of PE per week in mixed ability groups.  They study a variety of sports including invasion games, striking games, health related fitness, athletics, trampolining and orienteering.  The curriculum is well-balanced and provides lots of opportunities for all learners to enjoy and succeed in a variety of physical activity.

Key Stage 4

All learners in Years 9, 10 and 11 receive three lessons of PE per fortnight as the Core PE programme.  Year 9 continue the same range of activities covered in Years 7 and 8.  In Years 10 and 11 core PE learners can choose from two activities per unit.  Learners therefore have more opportunities to experience areas of the curriculum that particularly interest them.

The department also offers GCSE PE.  The GCSE PE course includes both practical and theoretical aspects.  The course covers exercise and methods of training, diet, safety aspects and risk assessment in Sport and applied anatomy and physiology.

Extra curricular and enrichment

The department offers a variety of extra curricular opportunities with practices and matches taking place after school.  The department sees extra curricular sport and activities as a fundamental aspect of the development of the whole child.  During the Autumn and Spring Terms the school is involved in Boys and Girls Football, Rugby League, Indoor Athletics, Dance, Badminton, Basketball and Trampolining.

During the Summer Term there are boys and girls track and field athletics meetings, cricket and rounders matches.
