Key Stage 3  music.jpg

Pupils in Key Stage 3 undertake a variety of activities designed to challenge and motivate them to take an active part in their own musical education.

Pupils are taught how to compose and refine music with an awareness of purpose of composition.  They are taught performance skills which allow them to develop their understanding of how to perform as part of a group and also improve their communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal.

Pupils learn to use a range of instruments including bass guitar, drum kit, keyboard, tuned and un-tuned percussion.  They learn how to select instruments for use depending on the mood, emotion or style of performance.

Key Stage 4

Pupils at Key Stage 4 study the Edexcel GCSE music syllabus.

Paper 1: Performing.  Pupils must perform one solo piece and one ensemble piece.  These can be performed using any instrument or the voice.

Paper 2: Composing.  Pupils must submit two compositions which must be from the Areas of Study that form part of paper 3.

Paper 3: Listening and appraising.  Pupils must answer questions about music they listen to during a timed examination.  Their answers must draw from their studies of music and their knowledge of music theory.

The Areas of Study for Edexcel GCSE music are; Structure in Western Classical music 1600 – 1899; Changing directions in Western Classical music from 1900; Popular music in context and Indian raga, African music and fusions.
