book_pic.jpgAt Castlebrook High School we aim to offer all pupils the opportunity of not only studying at least one language but we encourage a more international outlook where students gain an insight into people and cultures other than their own. We feel that this is an important skill to have in today’s multi-cultural society. Throughout their study, pupils develop linguistic skills in the following areas:
  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

Key Stage 3

In Years 7-9 pupils study French using a range of course materials. Pupils acquire a grammatical knowledge of the four french_flagkey skill areas through a range of topics which include:
  • Myself, my family and my pets.
  • School and hobbies.
  • My home and daily routine.
  • Food and drink.
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
  • Holidays.

Students are assessed throughout the year in order to evaluate their progress and they are awarded a National Curriculum level.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 pupils, can opt for GCSE French and/or our new fast-track GCSE Spanish course. Pupils prepare for the AQA Specification A exam. Pupils will study in a way which will allow them to gain confidence to use language in real-life situations. They will also develop their knowledge on grammatical structure and build a bank of active vocabulary. spanishThe GCSE course covers a range of topic areas which include:
  • Holiday and Travel
  • The Young Person and Society
  • My World
  • Work and Lifestyle
The key skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing are equally weighted in the GCSE examination. Students can be entered for Foundation and Higher tiers in each skill. Dictionaries are not allowed in the examinations but it is recommended that pupils purchase a bilingual dictionary for personal use.
