Welcome to the Art and Design Department. We are delighted to have the opportunity to update our website pages and hope the information we have included provides an insight into our way of working. The department continues to go from strength to strength with six GCSE classes this year. Key Stage 3
Art is taught in mixed ability groups at Key Stage 3. Learners receive one hour each week for Art in Key Stage 3. Learners are encouraged to look at a variety of artistic styles and techniques and this also incorporates the work of other cultures. In year 7 learners experience research based topics and study the work of Leonardo Da Vinci. From there they work in ceramics and produce terracotta warriors. In the space of a year they will experience design based work, painting and 3D studies.
In year 8 learners use ancient and modern African art as a source of inspiration. Outcomes include design and research based work alongside painting and three dimensional studies.
AQA GCSE Art
This course is completed in one year with learners receiving 5 hours tuition per week. Initially learners receive a structured skill based series of tasks which are based around the theme of natural form. From there they complete a project which enables them to embark on a more personal theme, the title of which is ‘Image and Text.' The coursework begins in July and ends in January and consists of 60% of the final mark. The exam is completed in lessons and consists of 40% of the final mark lasting from January to May.
AQA GCSE Photography
The course is completed in one year with learners receiving 5 hours tuition per week. Learners are taught how to use the Digital Single Lens reflex (SLR) camera and also use macro based tasks in lesson. The Art department provide cameras, SD cards, card readers and inspiration! Learners produce coursework from July to January, then the exam runs for three months. Tasks include shutter speed technique, digital image manipulation and macro photography. Learners are encouraged to work on their themes and ideas.
