Lab in a Lorry is an interactive mobile science laboratory staffed by volunteer practising scientists and engineers.
The aim of Lab in a Lorry is to give young people aged 11-14 the opportunity to do experimental science in the way it actually happens; exploratory, accidental, informed by curiosity and intuition, but also bounded and guided by the experience and insight of practicing scientists.
The Institute of Physics, in partnership with the Schlumberger Foundation, has designed three mobile science laboratories for 11 to 14-year-olds, set in three lorries which will travel around the UK. The Schlumberger Foundation focuses on bringing scientific opportunities to underserved schools and universities. The "lab in a lorry" tour hopes to reach some 50,000 students in its first year, and more importantly perhaps, to leave the youngsters who visit the vehicles with an impression that science is relevant and fun. Inside, small groups of students can carry out experiments intended to show science in everyday scenarios, with the help of practising scientists.
