Welcome to Sociology

What is Sociology?

Sociology is a social science. This means that people try to look at what happens in the world in a scientific and unemotional way. Sociology is about learning to understand something of how we organise our own lives and why we behave as we do.

We look at ‘social issues' such as crime.   Why do people commit crimes?  Do men commit more crimes than women?  Sociology examines the various factors that lead people in society into a life of criminal and deviant behaviours.

As well as giving learners the opportunity to examine life chances in the society in which we live, Sociology encourages learners to analyse critically the nature and source of information and to base judgments and arguments on evidence, not bias opinion and stereotyping.

Sociology is offered as an option at Key Stage 4 and is studied for 5 hours per week.
