Some children are eligible for free school meals.  If you are a parent / carer in receipt of one of the following benefits, your child may be entitled to free school meals.

Guidance

The parent must be responsible for that child, for example, receiving Child Benefit for them. The parent must also get:

  • Income Support; or
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance; or
  • Income-related Employment Support Allowance; or
  • the guaranteed part of Pension Credit; or
  • Child Tax Credit, which must not include Working Tax Credit or an amount for childcare paid with their Child Tax Credit. HM Revenues and Customs must also have worked out their income as £16,190 or less a year. This income limit is for April 2010 to April 2011 and may go up in future years; or
  • a Working Tax Credit 'run-on' payment for four weeks after stopping work or reducing working hours to under 16 hours a week.

To claim Free School Meals you will need to get in touch with your Local Authority office.  You will need to have proof of entitlements to benefit.
